Doxycycline is used to treat bacterial infections. Doxycycline treats urinary tract infections, intestinal infections, respiratory infections, eye infections, sexually transmitted infections (like gonorrhoea and syphilis), gum infections, diseases (like periodontitis), and others. Besides this, Doxycycline also treats acne-like lesions caused by rosacea. However, it does not treat facial redness caused by rosacea.
Doxycycline being an antibiotic prevents the growth of bacterial cells (the bad ones!) by preventing the formation of the outer protein layer of bacteria (cell wall) responsible for bacteria's growth and multiplication. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, i.e. it acts against various bacteria. It is a bacteriostatic antibiotic, i.e. it stops bacteria growth but does not kill them.
Doxycycline should only be taken if advised by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food but should be consumed at a fixed time for the best results. You should complete the course of Doxycycline as your doctor prescribes for better results. Some common side effects of Doxycycline are nausea (feeling or being sick), vomiting, diarrhoea, etc. Please consult your doctor if these side effects become troublesome.
Doxycycline is pregnancy category D (high risk) medicines, so its use in pregnant and nursing mothers is not recommended. Use of Doxycycline during tooth development (last half of pregnancy, infancy, and childhood up to the age of 8 years) may cause teeth staining (yellow-grey-brown). Do not consume alcohol as it may cause excessive drowsiness when taken along with Doxycycline. Before using Doxycycline, tell your doctor if you ever had an allergy to Doxycycline, have kidney problems, liver problems, swollen food pipe (esophagitis) or muscle disease (myasthenia gravis). Please do not drink alcohol with Doxycycline as it may increase the unpleasant side effects like drowsiness and dizziness.
Your doctor/ surgery(s) your doctor++Doxycycline is usually taken 1-2 times daily (in either dogs or cats) with a meal. The duration of treatment depends on the severity and type of infection being treated. Doxycycline may be taken for more than 2 days (a course of treatment for more than 4 days) depending on the severity of the infection. You should take Doxycycline for as long as your doctor prescribes for your infection. Do not eat or drink while taking Doxycycline. Doxycycline may increase sensitivity of skin to sunlight and sunburn will occur in some cases after a short time of sun exposure. If this happens, skin-side effects such as skin reddening and itching will occur. Doxycycline may rarely cause some serious side effects such as bone marrow depression, dark urine, nausea, dizziness, confusion, etc. If any of these side effects becomes troublesome, please inform your doctor or pharmacist. Please note that these are signs of side effects which may require medical attention. We supply only high-quality products which may interact with other medicines. Do not start or stop using any medicines without your doctor's advice.
There are some risks of developing malaria in children. If you develop symptoms of an infection such as difficulty breathing, severe skin rash or fever, please inform your doctor or pharmacist. Doxycycline is not recommended for use in children under 8 years of age. Discuss with your doctor if you think you have malaria.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding your doctor/ pharmacist may only prescribe certain antibiotics which are listed in the manufacturer's supplied with the product. The antibiotic medicines used in your treatment are listed at the beginning of this leaflet. When taking Doxycycline, there is a slight risk of developing certain types of pneumonia (flu-like illness) and a certain type of bacillary dysentery (respiratory disease). If you experience severe symptoms of these conditions, please inform your doctor or pharmacist. During the treatment of bacterial infections in humans, precautions should be followed during the pregnancy and in the breastfeeding period. The animal studies suggest that Doxycycline should not be used during pregnancy and during breastfeeding as it may cause serious effects on the developing baby. The use of Doxycycline in dogs and cats is not recommended. Use of Doxycycline in these species may result in death or difficulty in breathing. In animals, the drug is not recommended for long term treatment as it may impair the survival of the developing fetus. Doxycycline should not be used in children as it may cause problems with breathing and other breathing problems which may result in death.Doxycycline may be taken with or without food.
